Wiz’s Wisdom — Resume Writing

Something that I have always struggled to understand when I am reading resumes for a job that has been advertised (it doesn't matter if it is for a General Manager's/Duty Manager's/Bar Attendant's/Street Sweeper's role) is:

WHY ? OH WHY? do people insist on giving prospective employers a list of their job duties and responsibilities ??? Do they honestly believe that the employer does not KNOW what the role involves ???

More to the point, do they really believe that one General/Duty/Marketing/ Operations/HR Manager/Street Sweeper/Etc role varies SO significantly from another General/Duty/Marketing/Operations/HR Manager/Street Sweeper/Etc role that the prospective employer needs to be told exactly what they did ?

Put another way..................

..............How does an employer differentiate between two candidates that have held similar roles in similar sized organisations when all they have to go on is a list of each of the candidate's duties ?

So, how do YOU make YOURSELF stand out from the crowd ???

Simple.............. talk about YOUR ACHIEVEMENTS !!! Differentiate yourself from the opposition !

List your achievements, ideally in dot point form and use FACTS that can be QUANTIFIED and then mention YOUR INVOLVMENT. Here is the same example of an achievement written one way and then re-written the right way:

  Responsible for conducting OH&S meetings
  Recognised the need to conduct monthly OH&S meetings, which resulted in increased awareness throughout the business and led to a reduction in Lost Time Injuries (LTI's) from 19 to 2 over a 12 month period.

The challenge is to keep the points short and 'punchy' and to make sure that they are quantifiable ! There is no point in saying that you were a "popular person" unless you can back that up with facts and figures:

For example: 'Awarded Team Member of the Year Award 2004 which was voted on by management and peers in recognition for living the values of the organisation'.

This becomes an art form ! And trust me when I tell you that you can go back over your resume again and again and again, continually tinkering with it and adding improvements.

And before anyone asks, why would I bother ?

Just remember, your resume is the FIRST step (and impression) that you take to get a role that is literally worth THOUSAND$ of DOLLAR$ !!! Is it not worth spending some time on making sure you've done everything within your power to give you the best shot at securing the role and the bucks ???

I've heard it said that judging a person on their resume alone is not a fair process and to some extent I would tend to agree. However, as an employer that is recruiting there is no physical way that I could meet ALL of the candidates that apply for the job, not without taking a week off from everything else that has to be done ! Accordingly, there has to be a process to follow that enables me to bring the number of candidates down to a manageable level so that I can meet with them face-to-face.

And this process is via their resume ! So, hopefully this information will make you go back and revisit your resume and think long and hard about the detail that you provide prospective employers.

To sum up, I'll leave you with this thought:

"If I told you that I would give you $50,000 for completing a task (legal and moral), what lengths would you go to, to ensure that you completed it to the best of your ability ? Why then would you not spend a similar amount of time and energy to highlight those things that you have already achieved so that you can secure that new role worth $50,000 (or more) a year ?"
